Toothaches are common dental issues that sometimes prove to just be irritations while other times prove to be more serious. If you experience a toothache, it’s important to do what you can at home to relieve it. To help you, our dentist, Dr. David Trebisovsky, is happy to give you some instructions, which are:
First, reach for your floss. Floss can be very handy in a situation like this, especially because oftentimes toothaches result from stuck food particles and objects between the teeth and along the gumline. So, grab your floss and clean around the tooth. Don’t forget to clean along the gums.
Second, relieve pain. The first thing you should do to relieve pain is swish with a saltwater rinse. Just add a half teaspoon of salt to a cup of water and then swish it in your mouth for 60 seconds. This can help reduce swelling and kill bacteria. To further relieve pain, take over-the-counter pain medication if you feel it is necessary.
Third, ice outside the area. You can do this by wrapping an ice cube in a thin towel and placing it over the gums or on the tooth. You can also ice outside the cheek or lip with an ice pack if you prefer.
